Black and Aegean Seas 2010

Sea Research Foundation's Institute for Exploration team returns to the Black and Aegean Seas this summer aboard the E/V Nautilus to explore ancient history and learn more about the ocean.

 
Aegean and Black Seas 2009

Sea Research Foundation’s Institute for Exploration team had a successful return to the Aegean and Black seas in August 2009, discovering five shipwreck sites around the Datca peninsula, south of Knidos, Turkey, from aboard the new E/V Nautilus.

 
Lost City

Dr. Ballard and the rest of the Institute for Exploration expedition team have launched the 2005 mission to the hydrothermal vent field of the Lost City .

 
Return to Titanic

In June of 2004, nearly 20 years after first finding the sunken remains of the R.M.S. Titanic, marine explorer Dr. Robert Ballard returned to help the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) study the ship’s rapid deterioration.

 
Thunder Bay

In June 2001, IFE's new side-scan sonar (ECHO) was used to locate and acoustically image selected shipwrecks in Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary and Underwater Preserve.

 
Pearl Harbor

In 2000, Dr. Robert Ballard led a search for a Japanese midget submarine, one of several involved in the attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941.

 
Ashkelon

In June 1999, IFE mounted an expedition to the Eastern Mediterranean Sea.

 
Midway

In 1998, Dr. Robert Ballard led a search for lost wrecks from the Battle of Midway. The aircraft carrier YORKTOWN was discovered.

 
Hudson Shelf

IFE began the initial phase of its long-term study of the Paleo-Indians of the Ice Age with a preliminary expedition to the continental shelf off Long Island.

 
Skerki Bank

In 1997, IFE undertook its Skerki Bank Expedition in the Tyrrhenian Sea.
